Reeve Diaphragm Operation a Success

Paralyzed Christopher Reeve has had experimental electrodes implanted into his diaphragm to hopefully allow the Superman actor to breathe independently. Following the February 28 operation doctors have already reported a marked improvement, with Reeve now able to cope without his respirator for two hours at a time, compared to ten minutes before the surgery. Dr. Raymond Onders, who performed the surgery at University Hospitals Of Cleveland, America, says that Reeve will hopefully be able to breathe completely independently in the future with the help of the electrodes, which promotes breathing by sending electronic impulses to the diaphragm.
